Hello to all the lovely bat enthusiasts!🦇This year we are excited to announce the next Great Garden Bat Watch 2023 taking place for the fifth year in a row! We have had some fantastic responses and engagement with the community over the years, especially with our call to the folks of St Helier to help fill in the gaps of bat activity in town.Citizen science projects like this are vital within the Jersey community to aid with research into the island's urban and countryside bat populations, and can assist with informing further conservation and monitoring practices.For those keen to get involved, you'll be happy to know it doesn't require you to go far, and it is completely free! We simply ask that you go into your garden, or an open space near your house (or really anywhere on the Island - beach, park, the pub) to enjoy the last few rays of sunshine between Friday 9th June and Sunday 11th June. Event details: Any evening(s) from Friday 9th June to Sunday 11th JuneWhere: Any outside space (garden, lane, park, beach)When: From 20:45 till 22:00You do not need a bat detector or be able to identify bat species, all we ask you to do is record1) The time you saw the first bat2) The direction the bat flew from/to3) Details of the recorder, date and location4) If there is light spill around the location, i.e. street light, garden floodlights (This can be recorded in the 'Overall Comments' section of the form).We are working in conjunction with the Jersey Biodiversity Centre who have designed a bespoke data entry form for you to enter your sightings. The first members' walk took place on 3rd May starting near the top end of Waterworks valley.It was a lovely calm evening and the bats gave us a wonderful acrobatic display around the reservoirs. We could see clearly in the evening light, and later with the full moon - see the great photo of moonlight on the water from Richard.Mostly Common pips, with some Nathusius later in the evening and a possible sighting of a Serotine. Would you enjoy leading a group of volunteer members of a Jersey wildlife charity?Does your enthusiastic approach encourage others to get involved?If so, maybe this is just the position for you!The Jersey Bat Group are a registered Jersey Charity and are looking for a volunteer Chairperson. The group is run entirely by volunteers and is dedicated to the conservation of bats in Jersey.In addition to various research projects, bat walks and talks are organised to spread the word about these amazing creatures and the group also liaise with the government and other bat workers in the island. It's International Bat Appreciation Day and is a chance to show our mostly nocturnal, flying friends some love. As well as it obviously being a great excuse to binge a few Batman movies, it’s also an opportunity to delve deep and learn the important role bats play in the ecosystem and biodiversity.🦇 FIVE FACTS ABOUT BATS 🦇1. Depending on the species, bats eat a variety of things: fruit, nectar, insects and, even blood.2. A single brown bat can eat around 1,200 mosquitoes in one hour3. Bats can digest mangoes and other large food in about 20 minutes.4. Vampire bats don’t suck blood - they open up a wound and lick the blood instead!5. There are more than 1400 species of bat. A REMINDER ABOUT THE AGM AT THE SOCIETE TOMORROW NIGHT.We thought it would be good to have a chance for members to socialise together and what better opportunity than before the AGM!So we will have some drinks and eats in the Arthur Mourant room at the Societe Jersiaise on Wednesday, 19th April at 7 p.m. For catering purposes please let us know if you will be attending.The 2023 AGM will start at 7.30 p.m. .The agenda is:A review of the activities of the group in 2022The 2022 accounts to be presented for approval..Election of officers: nominations are welcome for Chairman, Research Officer, Communications Officer and Fundraising Officer. Here are some brief details:The seemingly small changes that can be made to our green spaces and gardens, especially the way we manage them, can actually add real benefits for wildlife. This talk will look at key things to include and avoid in your garden to make the most of opportunities for a variety of wildlife, with a particular focus on the real stars of the night - bats! Lisa is the Head of Conservation Services at the Bat Conservation Trust. She has an MSc in Biological Recording and holds Natural England licences for bat work. In her spare time, she volunteers with her local bat group, leading bat walks and giving talks. She became addicted to bats after attending her first bat walk with BrumBats back in 2008. Lisa also enjoys spending time in her own wildlife garden at home.We hope that you can attend. The Jersey Bat Group (JBG) is a registered Jersey charity with the aims: to survey and monitor bat populations, roosts, hibernacula and foraging sites in Jersey; to provide information and education regarding bats to its members and the Jersey public; and, where possible, to take steps to help protect local bat populations.JBG are seeking a new Chairperson to lead the group. He or she will be responsible for ensuring that the Committee functions effectively, that there is full participation during committee and members meetings, that all relevant matters are discussed and that effective decisions are made and carried out. Between meetings the Chairperson will need to keep in touch with others and see how the things that they have committed to do are progressing.
