Light Pollution

Although there is acknowledgement that light pollution can be a ‘source of annoyance to people, it can be harmful to wildlife, waste energy and detract from the enjoyment of the night sky’ (CPRE 2016) there is only about a fifth of England that retains skies completely free of light pollution.

Light pollution is known to have an impact on species from insects to turtles.  When it comes to bats, light pollution can impact on foraging site bat assemblages, commuting routes, can delay or prevent bats emerging from roosts, or can in ‘in some cases lead to bats abandoning or becoming entombed in the roost’ (BCT). Read More →

Press release:The Really Great Garden Bat Watch 2022. 2nd June to 5th June. Please join the Jersey Bat Group for the fourth Great Garden Bat Watch! This event combines the joy of (hopefully!) watching bats with citizen science based research that can help us better understand bats across Jersey. We are particularly keen to receive sightings of bats from St Helier and other urban areas around the Island to help us with our research into Jersey’s urban bat populations. We are asking if you could look for bats on an evening for 2nd June to 5th June, but please do feel free to use the form to submit your bat sightings throughout the summer. However: If you are undertaking your bat watch and submitting the form on dates other than the 2nd/3rd/4th/5th June then please go to www.timeanddate.com/sun/uk/saint-helier and ensure you are outside looking for bats at least 15 minutes before sunset and keep looking until 1 hour after sunset! That way you will ensure you spot the first bats…though it may mean you wait up to 30 minutes before seeing your first bat.We are asking you to go into your garden, or to an open space near your house or really anywhere in the Island to look for bats. A perfect way to spend a summer evening!Main event: Any evening from Thursday 2nd to Sunday 5th June (or more than one evening!)Where: Any outside space (garden, park, lane, beach)What time: From 20:50 until 22.00You do not need a bat detector as we are not asking you to identify bat species, all you need to note down is:1) The time you saw the first bat2) The direction the bat flew from3) Details of the Recorder, Date and LocationWe are working in conjunction with the Jersey Biodiversity Centre who have designed a bespoke data entry form for you to enter your sightings. See the link: www.jerseybiodiversitycentre.org.je/records/Great-Garden-Bat-WatchIf you manage to take any photos or videos of bats in flight during the Great Garden Bat watch then please post them in comments box for this event on our Facebook page or email them to us at the Jersey Bat Group or post them on your Facebook and tag in the @JerseyBatGroupWe look forward to receiving news of your local bats! For any further details about the bat watch or to submit your data by email then please email the Jersey Bat Group ... And acting as the point of contact and representative of the group with other organisations. You do not need to be a bat expert! If you are not already a member but are interested in this volunteer position then do still contact us!If you would like to know more then email us at: enquiries@jerseybatgroup.org ... Our current Chairperson is sadly stepping down at the next AGM, so we are looking for a new person to fill this very important roleChairperson: responsible for ensuring that the Committee functions effectively, that there is full participation during meetings, that all relevant matters are discussed and that effective decisions are made and carried out. Between meetings the Chairperson will need to keep in touch with other committee members and see how the things that they have committed to do are progressing. The Chairperson may from time to time need to represent the group, or find the most suitable representative from the group as a whole, depending on what is required (e.g. introducing a speaker at an event or talking about the work and objectives of the group). If you would be interested to learn more about the role then please contact the Jersey Bat Group: enquiries@jerseybatgroup.org ... See MoreSee Less

Bat research in Guernsey - please readThe most extensive bat survey carried out by citizen scientists in the Bailiwick of Guernsey has found several new species of bat and a new species of bush-cricket for the islands. The research was carried out through the Bailiwick Bat Survey: a four-year partnership project between the British Trust for Ornithology and the States of Guernsey’s Agriculture, Countryside & Land Management Services with coordination by La Société for the 2021 survey.
