Celebration of Bat International Night – two public walks
The Jersey Bat Group will be taking part in the International Bat Night celebrations by hosting not one but two public bat activity walks. These will take place at Val de la Mare reservoir on Saturday, 25th August and at Queen’s Valley reservoir on Sunday 26th August (with the kind permission of Jersey Water).
History of International Bat Night
Bats have an important role to play in our eco-system, and are one of the major contributors to keeping down night insects like midges and mosquitoes. Some of them are becoming endangered and International Bat Night was established to help promote a greater awareness and understanding of bats and why they deserve to be protected.. This celebration is held by bat groups across the British Isles, such as the Jersey Bat Group, and the Bat Conservation Trust, to coincide with International Bat Night (formerly European Bat Night) which is organised by Eurobats. The Bat Night has taken place every year since 1997 in more than 30 countries over the last full weekend of August.
How to celebrate International Bat Night
One of the best ways to spend International Bat Night is by joining one of the Jersey Bat Group walks and celebrating the night with the members. You will have the chance to hear about the different species in Jersey (17 confirmed at the last count!), how they live and the challenges they face and to listen to bat sounds on bat detectors as well as, hopefully, seeing the bats themselves. We also hope that we will have a visit from Hugh the Bat.
The walks are free (although donations are appreciated), and will be at staggered intervals between at 20.15 p.m. and 21.15 p.m. They will last approx.an hour and a half and you will need suitable clothing, sturdy walking shoes and a torch.
There will be some items for sale at the meeting point, including our new JBG big shopping bags (made of recycled material), our cute bat bugs and, of course, the JBG notebooks (which includes a list of species that have been found in Jersey) and there will be hot drinks and cakes/biscuits at the end.
There is no need to book but, as the walks are usually very popular, if you can car-share that would be appreciated.
- The walk on 25th August starts from the car park at Val de la Mare Reservoir, (off the Grande Route de St Ouen/St.Pierre).
- The walk on 26th August starts from the top car park at Queen’s Valley reservoir, off.(off La Rue D’Aval).
