Our next members meeting is on Wednesday 3rd March, on zoom!

The meeting will be in three parts:

A) Miranda Collett is giving the first talk and it is all about the visual identification of bats. This talk will appeal to all ages with lots of bats photos!

b) Then there will be a short Q&A session. This is your chance to ask batty questions, and we will do our best to answer them. So get your thinking caps on...

c) Finally, Yvonne Rabet will talk about her research project on the effects of artificial light at night in Jersey's urban environment. She will explain how she designed the project and the very interesting observations she has made from the results.

An email has been sent out with the meeting link, please let us know if you haven't received the email.

🦇 Members only 🦇

Miranda and Liz are arranging another sound ID session on 24th February at 19.30 to help continue developing our sound ID skills.

This will be via zoom but it is planned to make it as interactive as possible! To that end Miranda will send out a set of files from our Long Term monitoring project. So, real-life examples to play with! She will also include the ID guide which shows the call parameters for different species and which you will need when looking at some of the more tricky calls.

The idea will be that before the session you will have looked at the calls, used the ID guide, and made your judgement as to the most likely species for each file. Bat call analysis is not an exact science, and you may not be able to match up all the calls with known bat calls. (For example, distinguishing Nathusius from Khuls is very difficult).

At the session, we will each be able to take one of the calls and explain how we analysed it and what we think the species for that call is. We can highlight what difficulties we had, and pass on any tips to the rest of us. Miranda and Liz can provide input and suggestions. This will be a learning process for all us and an opportunity to ask lots of questions.

Please let us know if you can attend at enquires@jerseybatgroup.org

We have had a couple of messages about bat activity in the last few weeks from the public. It isn't rare that in slightly warmer climates like Jersey that our bats can be active all year round, the bats can go into torpor where they sleep for longer periods of time instead of a full hibernation. The bats will wake up to feed if the weather is warm enough.

If you do see any bat activity this time of year it is more likely to be a common pipistrelle.

If you have a sighting please record it on the Jersey Biodiversity Centre website!
