The first members' walk took place on 3rd May starting near the top end of Waterworks valley. It was a lovely calm evening and the bats gave us a wonderful acrobatic display around the reservoirs. We could see clearly in the evening light, and later with the full moon - see the great photo of moonlight on the water from Richard.Mostly Common pips, with some Nathusius later in the evening and a possible sighting of a Serotine. Thanks to Jonathan for organising the walk. Note for members: the next walk will be in June, keep an eye on your emails for the details when the date has been decided. ... See MoreSee Less

Would you enjoy leading a group of volunteer members of a Jersey wildlife charity?Does your enthusiastic approach encourage others to get involved? If so, maybe this is just the position for you!The Jersey Bat Group are a registered Jersey Charity and are looking for a volunteer Chairperson. The group is run entirely by volunteers and is dedicated to the conservation of bats in Jersey. In addition to various research projects, bat walks and talks are organised to spread the word about these amazing creatures and the group also liaise with the government and other bat workers in the island. You would enjoy keeping in touch with volunteers and be happy, once you have settled in, to represent the group (e.g. introducing a speaker at an event; talking about the work and objectives of JBG).You don't have to know about bats to start with - the best way to learn is to take part in the group's activities! You can get a flavour of the past public activities from the home page of our website: www.jerseybatgroup.orgIf you would like to know more then please do contact us. You can send an email to enquiries@jerseybatgroup.org and we can then arrange to give you a call, or meet you, to provide further details. ... See MoreSee Less

It's International Bat Appreciation Day and is a chance to show our mostly nocturnal, flying friends some love. As well as it obviously being a great excuse to binge a few Batman movies, it’s also an opportunity to delve deep and learn the important role bats play in the ecosystem and biodiversity.🦇 FIVE FACTS ABOUT BATS 🦇1. Depending on the species, bats eat a variety of things: fruit, nectar, insects and, even blood.2. A single brown bat can eat around 1,200 mosquitoes in one hour3. Bats can digest mangoes and other large food in about 20 minutes.4. Vampire bats don’t suck blood - they open up a wound and lick the blood instead!5. There are more than 1400 species of bat. That’s about a quarter of all total mammal species!Hands up who likes bats? And why? Or why not?Jersey Bat Group Jersey Bat Group ... See MoreSee Less

JBG Online talk - Gardening for bats and other wildlife - 22nd March 19.30We are pleased to advise that the above-mentioned talk is confirmed. Here are some brief details:The seemingly small changes that can be made to our green spaces and gardens, especially the way we manage them, can actually add real benefits for wildlife. This talk will look at key things to include and avoid in your garden to make the most of opportunities for a variety of wildlife, with a particular focus on the real stars of the night - bats! Lisa is the Head of Conservation Services at the Bat Conservation Trust. She has an MSc in Biological Recording and holds Natural England licences for bat work. In her spare time, she volunteers with her local bat group, leading bat walks and giving talks. She became addicted to bats after attending her first bat walk with BrumBats back in 2008. Lisa also enjoys spending time in her own wildlife garden at home.We hope that you can attend. The zoom invitation details have been sent out to all members.Topic: Gardening for bats and other wildlifeTime: Mar 22, 2023 07:30 PM LondonWe are also giving members of the public the opportunity to join us. The Jersey Bat Group (JBG) is a registered Jersey charity with the aims: to survey and monitor bat populations, roosts, hibernacula and foraging sites in Jersey; to provide information and education regarding bats to its members and the Jersey public; and, where possible, to take steps to help protect local bat populations.JBG are seeking a new Chairperson to lead the group. He or she will be responsible for ensuring that the Committee functions effectively, that there is full participation during committee and members meetings, that all relevant matters are discussed and that effective decisions are made and carried out. Between meetings the Chairperson will need to keep in touch with others and see how the things that they have committed to do are progressing. The Chairperson may from time to time need to represent the group, or find the most suitable representative from the group as a whole, depending on what is required (e.g. introducing a speaker at an event or talking about the work and objectives of the group). If you would like to put your name forward for this position, or would like to know more about the group before deciding, please email enquires@jerseybatgroup.org ... What bat is that? This bat was seen this morning under a licenced hibernation survey. Can you tell what type of bat this is? This winter the JBG has joined with another local charity, Annyctalus Ecology, to conduct hibernation surveys (as part of the National Bat Monitoring Programme). These surveys involve quietly and carefully searching for signs of bats at identified sites. Following this morning's survey, 3 sites have now been surveyed. And excitingly. three different species have been seen! (although at the moment only one bat at each site)If you would like to learn how to tell a myotis from a long eared bat or work out the difference between a lesser and greater horseshoe, just from their facial features the next JBG meeting is for you.James Shipman will be giving an on-line talk on alternative bat identification and handling techniques. James is the events coordinator for the Berkshire Bat Group but also helps train volunteers all over the U.K. and Europe as his hobby. He works in tree relocation for his day to day job but his passion outside of work is bat research and inspiring others.Non-members are very welcome to attend but we would ask that they register via EventBrite, The link ishttps://www.eventbrite.co.uk/e/a-talk-on-alternative-bat-identification-and-handling-techniques... Tickets are free (although donations are very welcome!).NB The photos were taken under licence and without flash. ... See MoreSee Less
