We are pleased to announce that our next talk will be given by Thomas Foxley, a PhD researcher at the University of West of England on the subject of "Very high resolution spatial modelling to inform landscape-level, strategic conservation planning for bats"..The talk will be online (on Zoom) and starts at 19:30 on 21st November 2023. It is open to both JBG members and non-members. For further details, please see the abstract below.AbstractVery high resolution spatial modelling to inform landscape-level, strategic conservation planning for bats.Background: _Habitat loss and fragmentation are among the greatest threats to biodiversity globally. In the UK, development is badly needed to tackle the current housing crisis but poses a threat to bats through habitat loss and fragmentation. There is both a moral and legal requirement to ensure that new development does not negatively impact bats and the habitats they depend on, however local decision-makers are unable to make informed decisions without a detailed understanding of how bats use the landscape.Aims:_ Using the greater horseshoe bat (_Rhinolophus ferrumequinum_) in Somerset as a model, we aimed to develop an innovative framework to map important habitat and model landscape connectivity, and to produce high resolution outputs that can be used to inform local development decisions.Methods:_ We gathered fine scale data on _R. ferrumequinum_ habitat use with GPS telemetry, mapped habitat using the latest high resolution, satellite derived land classification, and built a detailed vegetation map with LIDAR. 13th September. Possibly the last members' walk for 2023 and it was a lovely calm evening at St Clement's Parish hall at Le Hocq. We explored the little woodland behind the hall. Although there was not a lot of bat activity it was lovely to see some Common Pipistrelles flying quite high above the trees. After a gentle stroll, we crossed over to the benches by the sea wall where we soon found lots of bats zipping up and down the beach, no doubt scooping up lots of insects! Mostly common pips. but there were some lower calls that could be Nathusius or Khul's. Had a pleasant evening doing bat research under the Super Blue Moon last night. Thanks to everyone for their help & for making it a fun evening. There was a lot of early bat activity & we were able to capture a nicely marked Pipistrellus pipistrellus to add to our count of 3 species during past 2 weeks. The Jersey Bat Group International Bat Night celebration was a great evening with some wonderful people joining us. We had a great night of learning, engaging and some spectacular bat watching with a lot of the common pipistrelles flying around us. A few of our attendees caught a Serotine in the area too.International Bat Night may be an annual celebration, but that doesn’t stop us from learning and appreciating bats throughout the year!
