A reminder about the talk on Wednesday 28 Feb on autumn swarming by Molly Watson. For those of you unsure of what swarming actually is, here is a nice quote from Bat Conservation International:Swarming is a bat behaviour that is hard to describe without making it sound like a giant raging party for swingers. Before hibernation, many northern hemisphere bat species attend swarming events by gathering in large groups of up to thousands of individuals. At a suitable cave or mine, these groups fly around in a flurry of chasing, finding quick opportunities to mate in the chaos. In this setting, bats find mates from other colonies, increasing the population’s genetic diversity. Members you should have already received your Zoom link, non members can use the following link. Our first members meeting for 2024 was on 29th January and appropriately titled (given the recent weather) 'Bats in Winter'.Liz Walsh gave a great talk on the hibernation project that she has been participating in for several years. We learned a bit about bat ecology, about the likely signs and features of hibernation roosts and the curious places some bats choose. Apparently, some bats like to hibernate behind log piles - well, they will have plenty of places to choose from this winter!We heard about the considerable past effort surveying likely sites across the island, and the continuing monitoring of certain selected sites. We also had a fun time trying to identify various species from photos that had been taken during surveys.
