It is not common to have bats in care at this time of year, but we are currently looking after Patch and Longueville and waiting for the weather to warm up before we release them. They are both eating like horses, and seem to enjoy the comfort of bat care. Patch looks to be a Nathusius Pipistrelle and Longueville probably the same but we have yet to identify. The results of our bat box project were poor this year, with only one of our 6 sites producing any quantity of bats. We did however record a Brown Long-eared bat in a box in October, a probably Myotis in a box in the spring and several Common Pipistrellus during the year. The new CJM boxes are now outperforming the Kent boxes, so we will be replacing some of the dilapidated boxes with this model in the future. Is your New Year resolution to do something different but you are not quite sure what? Why not join the Jersey Bat Group as their secretary! We are a small Jersey wildlife charity dedicated to the conservation of bats and to telling everyone about these fascinating creatures. But you don't need to know about bats to act as the secretary. You do need to be organised, enjoy communicating and available to organise and attend approx. monthly evening committee meetings (can be done by Zoom). You will maintain the records on the dedicated JBG laptop (kindly donated by JT) and the present secretary will be happy to provide guidance and assistance at the outset. Interested? This male, adult Pipistrellus nathusii was found grounded at Victoria College. After 36 hours of hydrating, feeding & flight testing, he was considered ready for release. This species can migrate large distances. Longest documented distance over 2000km between Russia & Iberian Peninsular. We imagine he will be on his way soon out of this awful weather.
