What bat is that? This bat was seen this morning under a licenced hibernation survey. Can you tell what type of bat this is? This winter the JBG has joined with another local charity, Annyctalus Ecology, to conduct hibernation surveys (as part of the National Bat Monitoring Programme). These surveys involve quietly and carefully searching for signs of bats at identified sites. Following this morning's survey, 3 sites have now been surveyed. And excitingly. three different species have been seen! (although at the moment only one bat at each site)If you would like to learn how to tell a myotis from a long eared bat or work out the difference between a lesser and greater horseshoe, just from their facial features the next JBG meeting is for you.James Shipman will be giving an on-line talk on alternative bat identification and handling techniques. James is the events coordinator for the Berkshire Bat Group but also helps train volunteers all over the U.K. and Europe as his hobby. He works in tree relocation for his day to day job but his passion outside of work is bat research and inspiring others.Non-members are very welcome to attend but we would ask that they register via EventBrite, The link ishttps://www.eventbrite.co.uk/e/a-talk-on-alternative-bat-identification-and-handling-techniques... Tickets are free (although donations are very welcome!).NB The photos were taken under licence and without flash. ... See MoreSee Less

The first members meeting of 2023 will be via Zoom on 25th January at 19.30.James Shipman will be giving a talk on alternative bat identification and handling techniques. This is for all members, whatever level of experience you have. For those members involved in the JBG Bat Box project (and anyone else that might like to be involved) James will be including tips on identifying bats in boxes when looking from the ground.James is the events coordinator for the Berkshire Bat Group but also helps train volunteers all over the U.K. and Europe as his hobby. He works in tree relocation for his day to day job but his passion outside of work is bat research and inspiring others. He has suggested that if you have any bat photos you can send them to him beforehand and he can refer to them in his talk. You can email photos to him at jamesandrewshipman@hotmail.com , or send them via Facebook, or via WhatsApp (+447739968130).We look forward to seeing you all (virtually!) on 25th January. A zoom invitation will be sent out nearer the time but in the meantime make sure you put the date in your diary!Non-members are also welcome to attend but we would ask that they register via EventBrite, The link is www.eventbrite.co.uk/e/a-talk-on-alternative-bat-identification-and-handling-techniques-tickets-5... We are proud to announce the completion of our bat flight cage, thanks to the funding from the Association of Jersey Charities, the hard work of our bat friendly carpenter, Arie Uttenbogaard, and invaluable advice from Gail Armstrong. It features an 8m x 3m mesh cage made of aluminium on the outside and softer windbreak material on the inside. There is a wooden shed at one end in which to store items, which acts as a double door for safety. We have placed 2 Schwegler bat boxes inside. This will be a valuable tool in bat rehab where the bat can re-learn how to fly after an injury & we will be able to ensure the bat can fly prior to release from a dehydration event. It will also provide a safe environment for orphaned pups to learn to fly and look after themselves before release back into the wild. ... See MoreSee Less
