Don’t forget our open meeting on Wednesday 19th March at 7.30 p.m.It is in the Members’ room at the Société Jersiaise, Pier Road, St. Helier. No need to book.Come and have a coffee and a chat and find out how you could make a difference!Maybe you would enjoy manning the stall at the RJA&HS shows – a chance to chat to people about bats while raising some funds for the group.Or, help the members who are bat carers by collecting bats when members of the public find grounded or injured bats. And, if you wish, learn how to care for them until they can be released.How well do you know your parish? You could help find a nice bat walk that we can use for one of our public walks. And coming along on one of these public walks is great fun too!Would you like to be a citizen scientist, and encourage others to join in too? Why not take on publicising the annual Great Garden Bat Watch through social media etc., then analyse the results and report the details.Occasionally a home owner discovers they have a bat roost (lucky them!) and would like to know what kind of bats they are. While we cannot undertake commercial surveys we are happy to come along and see what bats we can detect. This can be a lovely way to spend a peaceful evening, watching for when the bats emerge, using the group’s bat detectors. You could join in!You may not know much about bats to start with but taking part in the group’s various activities and learning from others will mean you will soon be telling people what you have discovered about these fascinating mammals.See you on Wednesday! ... Help us count bats!We would like to get a team together that could help with roost emergence surveys.i.e. counting and recording bats emerging from a roost at a home owner's property. This is an important aspect of public engagement and also helps our research to identify types of roosts and speciesWhat is involved? One or two of the team would visit a property during the day, chat to the owners to find out what they have observed, look for signs (like droppings) and decide where to place recording equipment and team members for the survey.Then, shortly thereafter, return one evening before sunset with other team members to conduct the survey.And later, one or more team members analyse the results and let the group and home owners know what has been detected.As a team we would learn from each other but training would be given on roost site visits and emergence survey protocols.It is a lovely way to spend a peaceful evening and so interesting to find out more about our bats in Jersey.Would you like to know more? Please take this as notice of the forthcoming Annual General Meeting on Wednesday, 19th March, 2025 at 19.30 in the Members' room at the Société Jersiaise, Pier Road, St Helier.The order of business will:1. Summary of activities in 20242. Presentation and adoption of Accounts for 20243. Election of Officers. We are delighted to advise that a new member, Callum Webb, has stepped forward to offer himself for election as Secretary as Jane Hurley will be standing down. We are still looking for a Chairperson, so if you would like to put yourself forward, or would like to discuss the position first, please do contact us.The other officers are not due for re-election. That is Pam de Gruchy as Treasurer, Miranda Collett as Training Officer (both re-elected at the AGM in 2024) and Hannah Le Morvan as Research Officer (elected at the AGM in 2023).Once the business of the AGM is complete the meeting will be open to all, members and non-members. It is not common to have bats in care at this time of year, but we are currently looking after Patch and Longueville and waiting for the weather to warm up before we release them. They are both eating like horses, and seem to enjoy the comfort of bat care. Patch looks to be a Nathusius Pipistrelle and Longueville probably the same but we have yet to identify. The results of our bat box project were poor this year, with only one of our 6 sites producing any quantity of bats. We did however record a Brown Long-eared bat in a box in October, a probably Myotis in a box in the spring and several Common Pipistrellus during the year. The new CJM boxes are now outperforming the Kent boxes, so we will be replacing some of the dilapidated boxes with this model in the future.
