National Nathusius’ Pipistrelle Project

For the third year running the Jersey Bat Group will be participating in the National Nathusius’ Pipistrelle Project. 

Site selection and methodology for the local project will mirror the BCT guidance documents in order for the Jersey results to be comparable with the UK data.

Nathusius’ pipistrelle is considered rare in the UK but may simply be under-recorded. It is often found at large water-bodies, particularly during its autumn migration period (BCT).

The National Nathusius’ Pipistrelle Project was launched in 2014 with a grant from the People’s Trust for Endangered Species, to improve our understanding of the ecology, current status and conservation threats for Nathusius’ pipistrelles in Great Britain (BCT).

The aims of the project are to:

• Determine the resident and breeding status of Nathusius’ pipistrelle in Great Britain.
• Determine the migratory origins of Nathusius’ pipistrelles in Great Britain.

Trapping of bats is carried out under licence and is supervised by the lead agent for the project – Ani Binet.  Trapping starts tonight, and is only open to Jersey Bat Group members due to licencing requirements.  Details of trapping sessions (location, date and time) can be found on our Facebook page https://www.facebook.com/jerseybatgroup/
