Because of the decline in numbers of bats, they are now fully protected by law and it is illegal to kill or injure a bat or disturb them or their roosts. This includes blocking up entrance holes . If you are a householder concerned about the bats in your home please contact the Environment Department at environment@gov.je or the Jersey Bat Group at enquiries@jerseybatgroup.org.   This is particularly important if you are planning building work. This could include building and re-roofing operations, pest control, remedial timber treatment or cavity wall insulation. The law states that you contact the Environment Division before carrying out any work that might affect bats so that advice can be given on how to complete the work without disturbing the bats. More information is available in the Bats and the law leaflet from the States of Jersey Environment Division, Ecology Team.
